The Role Of Unarmed Security Officers In Business

The primary job of security officers is to safeguard their employer’s property. Security guards are often the first line of protection for businesses and residences against intruders and threats to the premises and its inhabitants.

All over the world, the security industry is expanding rapidly. According to the latest statistics, the global security service industry’s overall profit was approximately 116 billion in 2018.

Security personnel wears many hats, as their duties are determined by private security executives. Although actual tasks may differ according to the workplace, there are specific major responsibilities that makeup safety officers’ roles.

1. Preventing Security Issues

Preventing security problems is one of the security officers’ most critical jobs, as they perform a protective rather than an aggressive function in monitoring property and preserving public safety. Ranger Unarmed Security Agency uses precautionary measures to stop crime, particularly break-ins and burglaries.

Private security administrators must emphasize preventive measures and train their staff in them. Security personnel also need to be noticeable and observant to prevent intrusions and violence.

Given the increasing demand, the role of a security professional is gaining prominence in the modern era. According to recent reports, the employment of security officers in the United States alone is expected to rise by about 5 percent in 2024.

2. Observe and Report

Security officers are also required to monitor the property and report suspicious events. They may be assisted by cameras, alarms, and building access control systems. It is essential that they provide detailed information in incident reports, describing all surveillance operations, events, findings, testimony, and interviews conducted during an event.

A guard tour system that accurately tracks the positions of security officers during their rounds is effective for monitoring and surveillance purposes and can improve reporting.

3. Quick Response

By responding to an accident quickly and correctly, security staff will fulfill an essential duty. It is necessary to control a developing situation and to prevent an escalation whenever possible. That’s why it’s vital for security officials to be vigilant and to realize they should request assistance when a situation grows beyond their control.

4. Proper Communication

Clear communication is essential for security officers. They must interact quickly and efficiently to maintain public safety and to keep properties secure.

Coordinated efforts may involve interpreting and implementing regulations and procedures to allow guests to enter a gated housing complex; following the protocols for inspecting unsafe materials before they are allowed into a lobby; administering first aid in an emergency, and directing traffic. It also means reporting attacks on security officials or agencies.

5. Teamwork

It is essential that security guards work as a squad. All guards should follow the same security procedures, regardless of who they are working with. Cooperation among members of the security team can be tracked with surveillance monitoring systems, which guarantee that everybody is in their position around the perimeter and in other areas.

6. Always Visible

By being visible, security officers discourage criminal acts. Most potential intruders, shoplifters, burglars, muggers, and other violent people who see a security guard patrolling the target area will rethink their intentions. A plainly visible security presence is, therefore, an effective way to prevent vandalism, robberies, and other criminal acts, as well as lawsuits.

During crises as testing as Covid-19, security guards stand strong and firm on their duty. It is their determination that helps us feel secure amidst all the chaos.

7. Sharp Perception

A security guard is employed to notice unusual or odd behavior or occurrences that could be dangerous. It is critical, therefore, that he has both a keen sense of smell and acute hearing and vision. He should be able to detect a gas spill or downed wires and recognize the direction from which the odor is coming.

He must be able to sense when a sound is weird or unusual, such as a door being opened quietly. When anyone is trying to distract him from his work, he should remain alert. And above all, he must be capable of interpreting what he observes correctly and quickly.

An individual with poor focus or weak hearing and vision would not be an outstanding security guard.

8. Rapid Response

A security guard doesn’t just detect the onset of a problem; he also works efficiently to alleviate the situation. A security guard must always be vigilant so that he is not taken by surprise. The way he reacts to a current crisis or crime depends on the level of danger. A security guard must deal with risky situations of all types successfully.

9. Interpret and Report

An unarmed security officer’s work is not done when a volatile situation has been contained. Following an emergency, he or she must inform their bosses and the appropriate law enforcement agency immediately & further steps may be required.

10. Additional Responsibilities

Security guards are sometimes required to perform specific tasks other than what’s included in the job description, mainly if they work for an individual.

They may be required to take telephone calls, send text messages, communicate instructions, and sometimes even babysit. A security guard is often relied upon to notify clients about safety precautions and to ensure that all precautions are taken.

In short, the role of an unarmed security officer can have a handful of benefits for you and your property.

  • I agree that the mere presence of a security guard is enough to prevent vandalism or robberies. Even if they are unarmed, there's no way to tell upfront that they aren't. A would-be criminal would not want to risk it.
