The 5 Most Common Elderly Health Concerns That Seniors Encounter

The national median age has risen from 37.2 in 2010 to 38.4 years in 2019. As the American population ages, they face new and changing health concerns. If you have friends or family members that are aging, then it’s important to help them stay healthy.

By educating yourself on these elderly health concerns, you can help the elderly individuals in your life. This helps them stay in optimal health so they can live a long and happy life.

This list will explain the five most common health concerns that seniors encounter as they age.

1. Arthritis

One of the most common health problems that people over the age of 65 suffer from is arthritis. It leads to a lower quality of life as the sufferer struggles with pain daily. Unfortunately, the pain discourages people from moving and exercising.

The lack of movement and exercise can lead to other medical issues. While there’s no cure for arthritis, you can work with a doctor to create a personalized treatment plan to manage the condition.

2. Heart Disease

Smart seniors know that the leading cause of death in adults over the age of 65 is heart disease. The term “heart disease” actually refers to several types of heart conditions

As people age, they become more at risk due to other developing risk factors. Other conditions like high blood pressure, weight gain, and high cholesterol all contribute to an increased risk of heart disease.

The easiest way to prevent heart disease is to eat healthier, exercise, and get a full night’s sleep.

3. Cancer

One of the most common senior health issues is cancer. It’s the second leading cause of death for individuals over the age of 65. The best way to prevent cancer is with early detection

Regular colonoscopies, skin checks, and mammograms can catch some of the most common types of cancer.

4. Alzheimer’s Disease

More than six million Americans live with Alzheimer’s. Unfortunately, this number could be much higher. The diagnosis is challenging, and it’s difficult to know exactly how many people live with this chronic condition.

Alzheimer’s negatively affects the cognitive functions of the person. They experience memory loss, trouble with directions, difficulty doing math and struggle to complete daily tasks.

If you know someone who has Alzheimer’s, consider participating in a Walk to end Alzheimer’s. These events raise money to support the fight against Alzheimer’s.

5. Osteoporosis

According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, there are 54 million Americans over the age of 50 that suffer from the low bone mass. This puts all of these people at risk for bone fractures or breakage. When people have osteoporosis, mobility is reduced, and this causes their quality of life to suffer.
