6 Steps To Prepare Your Home For Christmas

Christmas cannot always be the most wonderful time of the year, especially if you’ve got the added pressure of hosting several people. Before you’ve even started thinking about presents and getting the tree up, there are some simple steps you can take to ensure that your Christmas day will run as smoothly as possible.

Although it may seem early to start thinking about Christmas, now is the perfect time to complete these steps as it gets them out of the way before your to-do list gets too long.

Step 1: Have a clear out of any clutter

Before everyone gets new additions to their toy cupboard or wardrobe, make sure to clear out all the old stuff first and be sure to store your artificial Christmas tree. Otherwise, you may end up with an excess of stuff and nowhere to keep it. With the items that you don’t want, you can separate them into a few piles; one to the charity shop, one to sell and one to throw away. Think, for every one thing you bring into your house, one thing must leave your house. This way you won’t end up with overflowing cupboards or wardrobes.

Unused items can sit in our cupboards for a while before we decide to take the plunge and get rid of them, so tackle this task now, or Boxing Day will come along and you won’t have anywhere to store your new presents.

Step 2: Do your deep clean ahead of time

If you manage to complete step 1, then this makes step 2 so much easier. Once the clutter is gone, this enables you to be able to do a really deep clean of your home. On Christmas Eve you don’t want to be vacuuming or dusting – so get it done beforehand. If cleaning isn’t one of your priorities, then think about getting a professional cleaning service into your home to blitz it before the big day.

Also, it may be a good idea to have products like carpet cleaner stocked up and to hand because you never know when a glass of red wine can be spilt on your beautiful cream flooring.

Step 3: Write down an inventory of all the essentials you have or need to buy

This is a key step to take if you are hosting any family this winter. Have a look at your basic items, like towels and toiletries to check that you’ve got enough to go around. Also take a look at larger items, like your dining chairs – have you got enough chairs to fit everyone? If not, it might be time to purchase some more chairs so that they’ve got enough time to arrive before Christmas day. This may also be a great time to shop for Christmas gifts, the earlier the better!

Step 4: Prepare your kitchen

Christmas day is the busiest day of the year for your kitchen. So to keep things running smoothly, organise your kitchen beforehand so that you know exactly where everything is kept.

An even more important step to take is to check that all your electronics are working properly, so inspect your oven, microwave, hob and dishwasher. If they’re not working properly, it’s better to find out now than on Christmas day.

Step 5: Install your decorations

This is one of the last steps to take when preparing your home for Christmas. Making your home feel cosy with decorations is one of the easiest (and most festive) things you can do to make your guests feel comfortable in your home. Remember that your furniture can be moved to allow more space for your festive decorations. If you’ve got a mantelpiece, a lot of people choose this area to be the focal point of their decorations as they adorn it with stockings. You can buy christmas stockings wholesale online for it.  Decorating as a family is a great way of bonding over the festive season.

Step 6: Don’t stress too much, just enjoy yourself

Christmas is all about spending time with your loved ones and enjoying great food. The preparation can be stressful, but it’s all about planning. Once you’ve planned what you’re going to do and when it should be pretty smooth sailing from there.

Enjoying the day is more important than vacuuming up pine needles that have fallen from your Christmas tree. Follow each step closely and you may just find yourself having an enjoyable, stress-free time during this holiday season.
