How To Make Your Blog Posts Easier To Read

Want more people to read your blog posts? Improving the readability of your posts could be a simple way to do this. Below are just a few tips for making your blog posts easier to read.

1. Avoid long run-on sentences

Don’t you hate it when a sentence is really long just like this one and contains lots of clauses but not enough punctuation so you start to lose track of where each point begins and ends and it becomes exhausting to read?

Lengthy sentences can make your blog posts harder to read. In fact, it’s best to keep most sentences under 25 words. It’s good to use a mix of different sentence types. This includes complex sentences, but you need to make sure clauses are separated with punctuation – just like this sentence.

2. Know your audience’s knowledge level

It’s important to consider the knowledge level of your audience. If your readers don’t have much knowledge of a topic, you should keep your language simple. Only use technical terms if you’re going to explain what they mean. If readers are likely to be more knowledgeable, then you can throw in some complex jargon. This will help build trust that you know what you’re talking about, and it will stop your blog posts from coming across as too dumbed-down. Just make sure not to go overboard with technical terms.

3. Break up text with images

A wall of text can be intimidating for many readers. Images can help to break up text and make your blog posts more approachable. Royalty-free images are a good option if you’re writing lots of blog posts, but don’t want to keep paying for images. On top of using photos and digital drawings, consider also using graphs and infographics. These are engaging ways to deliver stats.

3. Use paragraphing and headers

White space can also be used to break up text and improve readability. A simple way to add white space is to add paragraph breaks to help separate ideas. The optimal length for paragraphs is about 100 to 200 words, however, more complex points may require longer paragraphs.

Headers are also worth using alongside paragraphs. These can help to separate blog posts into sections, which can make it easier for readers to skip to the section they need if they’re in a hurry. When it comes to very long posts, you can also use subheadings and sub-sub-headings to further break down the text.

4. Use numbered lists and bullet points

Numbered lists and bullet points also have a few advantages. They can make blog posts more readable by:

  • Adding more white space
  • Slowing down the reader
  • Making each item in a list stand out
  • Highlighting benefits or drawbacks
  • Creating clear summaries of information

5. Use sensible fonts and colors

While there are many different fonts that you can use in a blog post, it’s best to stick to fonts that are easy to read on a screen. This typically includes sans-serif fonts like Arial, Helvetica, Roboto, and Public Sans. As for colors, black text over a white background cannot be beaten for clarity.

6. Don’t stuff your posts with keywords

Keywords can help to improve the search engine rankings of your blog posts, however, you need to integrate them naturally. Trying to force awkward keywords into sentences or using the same keyword too many times could be distracting. Focus on making the text feel natural so that you’re not putting off readers.
