Face Coverings And Foggy Glasses: How To Stop Glasses From Fogging Up

You are in the grocery store aisle, and you want to check the price on the bottle; down come to your glasses and instant foggy glasses! How many times has this happened to you?

Face masks, which protect our nose and mouth, have become commonplace. Indoor public areas, such as public transportation, restaurants, malls, and supermarkets, are some of the places where we wear them. They have, in fact, become part of our dress code.

It gets some getting used to wearing a mask. It is not pleasant and brings with it some issues, one of them being it can make your glasses fog up.

Can masks and fog-free glasses coexist? Absolutely! This article offers a few pro tips so you can learn how to stop glasses from fogging up.

Why Do Glasses Fog Up?

Condensation develops when warm air comes into contact with a cold surface.

Consider how your glasses fog up as you open the door to your oven. With a mask, the same thing happens. When warm air escapes through the top of the mask, it condenses on the lenses of the glasses, causing them to fog.

How to Stop Glasses From Fogging Up

We’re still coping with pandemic-like challenges. Isn’t it true that we don’t need foggy lenses on top of everything else?

Let’s look at how to stop glasses from fogging up while wearing personal protective equipment such as a mask.

1. Wear a Well-Fitted Mask

To keep glasses getting fogging up, we must keep the air we breathe from coming into contact with the glass of our lenses.

To know how to stop glasses from fogging up while wearing a mask, keep air from flowing out, the top edge of your mask. Your mask must be very well fitted to the nose and under the eyes. By doing this you will be forcing your warm breath to escape around the sides, the bottom, or through the mask itself without coming into contact with your glasses.

Some masks have a wire along the bridge of the nose which helps with adjustment.

You can also use the glasses themselves to anchor the mask against your face. You see face coverings and glasses can co-exist!

2. Using Water and Soap to Wash the Glass Lenses

Another option is to wash the glasses with soapy water. Then shake off the excess water and let them air dry. Alternatively, dry the lenses with a soft clean cloth.

What makes this approach so effective? A thin layer of soap is left behind, which serves as a fog shield. Voila! The lenses will not fog!

3. Use Tape

If you’re looking for a more permanent solution, this one is for you.

Use sport or surgical tape to secure your mask across the bridge of your nose and to your cheeks. If you have a tendency to allergies, test the tape first and make sure it won’t irritate your skin.

4. Other Solutions

If none of the above work for you, you can purchase wipes or sprays that are made specifically to help with foggy lenses. However, before you try one, double-check that the additives won’t damage your lenses.

I Can See Clearly Now!

Nobody enjoys it when your glasses fog up! If you follow one or all of the steps above you should know how to stop glasses from fogging up!
