Bringing Back The Smile: Is Teeth Whitening A Safe Practice?

Everyone loves a brilliant smile. But if you’ve spent your life drinking coffee or tea or smoking cigarettes, you know that your teeth aren’t as white as they could be. You’ve seen the ads and the kinds of toothpaste and products that promise to whiten your smile by two levels. But there’s always a concern for safety, especially when it comes to your teeth. So you’re probably wondering if whitening your teeth is safe to do and what the risks are.

This is a valid question that you might think about when you are at your routine dental cleaning. And the answer is that for the most part, tooth whitening is extremely safe. There are several methods that you can use for whitening your teeth. Among them are at-home treatments, or traditional homoeopathic remedies. You can also go in to have your teeth professionally whitened.

Baking Soda

When it comes to homoeopathic remedies, some of the most common is using baking soda as a dentifrice or rinsing your mouth out with hydrogen peroxide. Baking soda is a good way to reduce the number of bacteria in your mouth and remove stains to naturally whiten your teeth. Studies have shown that baking soda in toothpaste is effective at removing yellow stains. You can use regular baking soda. Just mix one teaspoon of baking soda with two teaspoons of water and brush with that paste.

Check out the video how to use baking soda for teeth Whitening:

Professional Teeth Whitening

Professional teeth whitening is when a cosmetic dentist applies a whitening product to remove stains from your teeth. These bleaching agents can be normal hydrogen peroxide (at a much higher concentration than you can commercially purchase) or carbamide peroxide. Because you’re using a highly concentrated peroxide solution, there are a couple of risks. The most common side effect is gum irritation. That is usually caused by a tray that doesn’t fit right, rather than the peroxide, however.

Preventive Measures

One of the best ways to whiten your teeth is to practice preventive medicine. That means that you should avoid staining drinks like coffee or tea. As well, you should avoid cigarettes and limit the sugar in your diet. As well, you should brush and floss frequently. The fewer bacteria that are on your teeth, the less plaque and yellowing effect.

Dental Sealants

You can also get dental sealants on your teeth to prevent damage from plaque. A dental sealant is a thin plastic coating that is applied by your dentist on the surfaces of the back teeth (your molars). This sealant protects the grooves and nooks that bacteria like to hide in and thus can prevent cavities and tooth decay which can promote yellowing pf your teeth.

When you are considering whitening your teeth, you should make sure to stick with proven methods. There are other theories about how you can whiten your teeth; including rinsing with oil and using activated charcoal, but their efficacy has not truly been proven. When you are ready to whiten your smile and bring the gleam back to your pearly whites, the best thing is to consult your dentist.
