How To Nourish Your Self-Esteem When It Is Low

Self-esteem dictates so much of how we live and how we value ourselves as human beings. Ensuring it’s looked after is pivotal for wellbeing.

Here are five separate ways that you can easily improve your self-esteem when you are feeling low:

1. Use Positive Affirmations

Positive affirmations are extremely popular, especially those that motivate you to become successful, but they can be problematic – they tend to make those that do not have a lot of self-esteem feel absolutely terrible. Why is this? If we do have chronic self-esteem issues, and we are feeling down, declarations that are the opposite of how we feel are going to conflict with our existing belief system.

Ironically, if you are listening to positive affirmations, they will help you if your self-esteem is already high. These affirmations can be helpful, if you are not feeling positive, by making them a little bit more believable. Instead of saying “I will succeed and I will be successful”  this should be changed to ” I’m going to keep going until I succeed.”

2. Develop And Focus Upon What You Are Competent At Doing

Your self-esteem often represents your ability to achieve something, and it is often built by actual abilities that we have that matter to us. For example, if you are excellent at cooking meals, you should consider doing a dinner party.

If you are in good shape, and constantly run, then you should enter races. What you want to do is focus on what you are good at, and then find opportunities, or perhaps even careers, that can augment and improve your sense of self-esteem using these gifts that you possess.

3. Accept Compliments Willingly

Self-esteem gets also be tricky when you are feeling bad, and if you are, you may be resistant to receiving any type of complement – oddly, this tends to be when we need them the most. Your goal to tolerate comments that are positive, and receive them openly, should be your primary focus. To avoid this constant reflexive action to resist compliments, train yourself to automatically feel good when you get this type of feedback.

Over the course of time, you will start to say “thank you” for those compliments instead of running away from them. Your self-esteem will gradually improve and become stronger by developing these habits.

4. Deviate From Self-Criticism And Use Self Compassion

When your self-esteem is low, being self-critical is very common. Our goal should always be to enhance our sense of self-esteem, and this can be done if we are able to use self-compassion instead. By being critical about ourselves, we will notice that that constant monologues will kick in which will affect our ability to feel good about ourselves.

That’s why it’s important to talk to ourselves as if we are speaking to a dear friend, and use these positive comments directly on ourselves. We can avoid damaging are self-esteem successfully by avoiding critical thoughts and building ourselves up in a positive way. Speak to the experts at Claritychi.com for help with self-compassion.

5. Consider Your Self Worth

It’s very important to consider your self-esteem at all times, and revive your positive thinking even if you have had a negative experience: you can do this by creating a list that is meaningful to you. An example of this is being rejected by someone that you were dating, and then list all of the positive aspects of what a good relationship means to you; if you failed at work, perhaps you missed a promotion, you should consider all of the qualities that you value such as your sense of responsibility and your work ethic.

Choose these items, you will quickly see that you are actually more appreciated than you may realize. By doing this every day, your self-esteem will certainly receive a boost. Hopefully, these five tips will help you improve your self-esteem and ensure you’re feeling on top of your game.
