Absolutely, in fact, it is one of the biggest advantages of having routine heart checks. When a cardiovascular problem is identified before symptoms appear, the condition is much easier to manage with relatively simple interventions.

Early detections also give people the chance to make meaningful lifestyle changes before any damage becomes permanent. From improving your diet and increasing physical activity to quitting smoking and managing stress, there are many steps you can take to address potential heart problems.

In a way, you can think of routine heart check-ups as preventative measures. Just like you keep a car serviced to prevent any major breakdowns out of nowhere, you get these checks to fix any problem before it turns into a life-threatening emergency.

What is a heart check generally like?

If you have never had a heart check-up before, the process is actually much simpler than you’d think. When you walk in for one, the first thing you’ll do is have a detailed discussion with your doctor. They’ll ask about your medical history, lifestyle, family background, and any symptoms that may have previously gone unnoticed – things like breathlessness, occasional fatigue, or slight tightness in the chest.

Once this discussion is done, your doctor will list out a few tests to get a clear picture of your heart health. The first of these will likely be a blood pressure test, blood tests, or an ECG (electrocardiogram). While blood pressure tests are self-explanatory – being a key predictor of heart disease – blood tests are taken to measure your cholesterol levels, triglycerides, and blood sugar. These markers help doctors figure out whether plaque is forming in your arteries or if some metabolic issue is affecting your heart health. An ECG records the electrical activity of your heart to check for any irregular heartbeats or other abnormalities.

If these tests prove insufficient, your doctor may also order further investigation via imaging scans (echocardiogram), stress tests, and CT scans. Now, if you’re going for a heart check-up via the NHS, these advanced scans may not be available to you unless there is a very clear symptom related to heart disease. As a result, many people recommend opting for a private heart check, as it not only offers all these scans right away but also shorter wait times and longer consultation periods. It may cost a little more, but it will be more than worth it for the peace of mind it provides.

While anyone can benefit greatly from having their heart checked, certain groups of people should have these checks be borderline mandatory. Age is the big player with this – as we grow older, our risk of having a cardiovascular disease rises dramatically. This is because our arteries grow weaker and more inflexible, while plaque build-up also increases simultaneously. This is why many doctors recommend routine health check-ups for everyone over 40. If a close relative of yours has experienced heart attacks, strokes, or other cardiovascular symptoms, your own risk will likely be higher than average. In such a case, regular heart check-ups are also an absolute must.

While the first two are more natural and somewhat out of your control, your lifestyle habits will also play an important role in determining your cardiovascular risk. If you smoke, struggle with a poor diet, are physically inactive, or face chronic stress, you need to get yourself checked by a good doctor regularly. The consequences of these habits may not be apparent in the moment, but they will severely affect your heart in the long run.
