If you are moving house to another part of the country there is, of course, a great adventure ahead of you, not just in terms of getting a new home, but also the road trip itself.
Lots of people are now moving very far away to start a whole new life, and this is why it’s important to be aware of the following so you can move cross country safely:
1. Plan Your Travel
You could be moving down the road or moving to another state. Either way, you should create a comprehensive travel plan. We can be giddy with excitement at the prospect of moving, and this can mean that we don’t necessarily prepare for the rigors of the road. We have to build in natural breaks, but you also need to make sure that we get there before the moving company.
This could mean that they will follow you or you’ve got to be on a race against time to get there, but there could be traffic problems or you could be looking so much in the rearview mirror to see if the moving van is behind you that you don’t look what is in front of you. Accidents can occur on long road trips and while a car accident lawyer may be needed if there is a bit of a fender bender, you can avoid this by planning your journey safely and securely.
2. Travel Light
You might be looking to save on moving company costs by squeezing as much as humanly possible into your car. The biggest problem with this is that there’s a lot more distractions inside the car than is necessary. We tend to play a game of Tetris when loading our car, and if you pack your car right up to the roof, will this obstruct your view of the road?
If you are able to fit in that last box on the passenger seat and think nothing of putting the seat belt over it, this could cause a major problem for you on the road if you have to break suddenly. Lots of people try and drive while also holding those precarious boxes in place. This is a big no-no. Instead, use the moving company for what you’ve paid them for and travel light because you will get there in one piece.
3. Declutter the Home Before You Pack
We’ve got to make life easier for ourselves, and while the moving truck will take a lot of the load, we still have to unpack it all at the other end. It’s a massive journey, and therefore you need to declutter before you start packing because the task of taking everything out of boxes and suitcases after a long journey is exhausting, to say the least.
Do what you can to declutter, and this also means having to make some difficult decisions. You are moving to start a whole new life, so you may as well take this opportunity to rid yourself of some aspects of your past.
Moving cross country is an amazing experience, but we have to make sure that we are ready for it, not just in terms of the logistics, but also being ready for the road.
